The following pieces of artwork reflect the artistic talent in the
Pacific community, and marks the fourth annual ‘Pacific Forum Line Art
Competition’.
The Pacific Forum Line (PFL) Art Competition was initiated in 2001 to
support the development of art among students in the Pacific region.
The competition provides a unique opportunity for students of all ages
to design original works on a Pacific theme. This year entrants were
asked to produce an original piece of artwork that captured the
importance of ‘Children of the Pacific’.
The artwork had to depict the life, values and aspirations that
children of the Pacific are brought up with, for example respect for
the community and environment, to appreciate the little things in life,
a desire for peace, the Pacific Way.
The artwork specifically relates to the islands of New Zealand, Fiji,
Papua New Guinea, Samoa, American Samoa, the Cook Islands and Tonga –
being the countries serviced by Pacific Forum Line vessels.
This year the main prize giving was held at the Pasifika Festival in
Auckland’s Western Springs on Saturday 13 March 2004.
The six main prize winners received a cash prize of NZ$1000 plus a
voucher for sea freight with PFL to the value of NZ$550. They will also
have their artwork displayed in the PFL calendar as a stand-alone
feature for a period of two-months. Our Highly Commended winners were
awarded a prize of NZ$150 and will also have
their artwork displayed in the PFL calendar alongside other highly
commended winners.
In 2003, only its third year running, we received over 400 entries for
the competition. The competition is growing every year!
The competition provides a unique opportunity for students of ALL AGES
and all areas of study to design original works on a Pacific theme -
'Children of the Pacific'. Entries are rich in colour, creative,
original, and most importantly reflect the theme. Entrants are asked to
include a brief description (up to 50 words in length) with their entry
that explains their interpretation |
