St. Mary’s
College Old Girls Association (SMOGA) NZ had been running
fundraising socials at the Marist Club House Otahuhu (Auckland).
The socials are one of many events SMOGA has held in the past two
years to fundraise for St Mary’s Samoa school projects as well as
the golden jubilee celebrations of the college scheduled for
December, end of this year.
SMOGA President, Jackie Wendt said “We had good turn out and are
really appreciative of the contribution from all the old girls,
their families and members from the wider Samoan community in
supporting the many fundraising activities we have organised.
Jackie went on to say that SMOGA NZ is planning to participate in
the celebrations in December and will present a cheque to ST Mary’s
College Samoa to assist in the schools projects which include the
construction of a school hall. “Thereafter, we will be keeping a
close eye on the schools continued progress and development and
assist wherever possible.”
Christina Lam, Secretary for SMOGA said, “SMOGA NZ was a small group
but she was proud of all of the members who have worked really hard
to raise funds and that they were very happy to have come this far.”
It hasn’t been easy but we have persevered and I commend all the
girls and the executive committee for their commitment.
SMOGA NZ was set up two years ago with the aim of raising funds for
the St Mary’s College Samoa projects. The mother branch, SMOGA Samoa
is currently organising and co-coordinating the Jubilee activities
for December. The construction of the school hall is being
supervised free of charge by Velda Suhren, an architect and former
student. SMOGA Samoa has also set up a website aimed at linking all
former students around the world. The website also features the
history of the college, programme for jubilee celebrations and a
photo gallery of past students and teachers.
St Mary’s College Samoa, an all girls school was first established
by the Society of Marist Sisters Missionaries (SMSM) in 1956 at
Vaimoso and has been one of the key institutions educating Samoan
girls from Catholic families in the last 50 years. |

The school has a reputation of producing high achievers, excelling
in sports, arts, academia, business and other areas.
Margaret Amoa, SMOGA member and Auckland university graduate said
that she had been a member of SMOGA NZ for the last 2 years and was
happy to be able to give something back to the college. She also
looked forward to reconnecting with teachers and former class mates
at the Jubilee celebrations in December.
Other fundraising events are in line before the end of the year and
SMOGA NZ is encouraging all former students and supporters of the
college to participate and support these fundraising activities.
Memorabilia such as mugs, key rings, souvenir pins are on sale to
further fundraise for the Jubilee celebrations and the schools
projects. Please contact executive committee for further details.
