NZ AIDS FOUNDATION – PACIFIC PEOPLE’S CALENDAR 2005

By Malia Tu’ai Manuleleua
The New Zealand Aids Foundation, Pacific Peoples Project officially launched the “Love Life” 2005 Calendar at Television New Zealand (TVNZ).

The event was well attended by close to a hundred guests and those who had been involved in the production of the Calendar. Siaosi Mulipola, Health Promoter with the Pacific Peoples Project, New Zealand Aids Foundation said that “it was a wonderful resource and that it was aimed at raising awareness of Aids and HIV in New Zealand, the Pacific and on a global level as well.”

Pacific Celebrities and Media personalities such as Lindah Le Pou, Annie Crummer, Linda Vagana, Naked Samoans, Tagata Pasefika, Neil Ieremia, Ida Malosi are a few of the faces that feature in the Calendar. Siaosi said that they were very appreciative of the people that freely contributed of their time and faces in support of the Pacific calendar and in turn the promotion of HIV and Aids awareness amongst Pacific communities.

Malia from AuckPac PHO, the main sponsor for the calendar said that it was “a privillege for AuckPac to have been a part of this very worthy project" and that they “looked forward to supporting future Pacific Peoples Projects”. Malia added that “AuckPac is the new brown kid on the block” in terms of PHO’s (Primary Health Organisations). We are a Pacific led organisation with 6 clinics within the Auckland region, small as compared to larger PHOs but big enough to make a significant impact in Pacific health… and still growing too.”

“When Siaosi came to AuckPac last year in August and presented us with the idea of a calendar, we were in the process of identifying how, what and where AuckPac could develop sexual health services and resources for our enrolled population. Therefore, the idea of a calendar provided a perfect opportunity for AuckPac to work with the New Zealand Aids Foundation in developing this Pacific resource. Months of blood, sweat and tears have passed to bring us to this day.” Malia paid tribute to everyone involved in the production of this resource but in particular to “the beautiful brown Pacific faces that feature in this calendar.”

Siaosi said, “ It’s an excellent Pacific resource of brown Pacific people supporting a very significant message. If we look at the statistics for HIV and Aids in Pacific

communities in New Zealand and the Pacific there has been a need for a resource of this kind… where we have Pacific role models at the forefront promoting awareness of HIV and Aids… and the bottom line message is to practice safe sex.” We need to come out and speak more openly of these issues if we are to survive as a people, as a community.”
