According
to Mark Vaauli, Vice President of PIBBA. The Pacific Island
Bodybuilders Association was formed and founded in 1997 by
Ms Esther Tofilau, with a vision to raise the level of
self-esteem and to promote all Maori and Pacific Island
Bodybuilders within Aotearoa. Secondly to provide them with
the knowledge and training skills to gain the confidence in
becoming a World Bodybuilding Champion.
With
humble beginnings in 1997 and the community support, a Mr.
LeTanoa Bodybuilding competition was proven successful. In
1998 and 1999 PIBBA was extended with an invitation from the
INBA (International Natural Bodybuilding Association) to
take a Pacific Island Team to the INBA World Natural Universe in Las
Vegas USA and World Natural Olympia in Greece. 1999 included the invitation for Ms Tofilau to be a
Judge at this International Bodybuilding Event.
2000 opened more opportunity for PIBBA, with Ms Tofailau being elected onto the Executive Committee of the NZFBB (New
Zealand Federation of Bodybuilders Incorporated). With the
NZFBB being the main body who is recognized by the IOC
(International Olympic Committee), NZDA (New Zealand Drug
Agency), Hillary Commission and the New Zealand Sports
Federation.
This
move has no dealt gain credibility for PIBBA by way of
PIBBA's bodybuilding events being sanctioned by the NZFBB and is also a
qualifying event for the New Zealand National. From the Nationals,
members
have the opportunity to become New Zealand representatives
for World Bodybuilding Championship.
One
of PIBBA's success stories is Mr. Tony Ligaliga, who
competed at his first Bodybuilding competition in 1996, and
is now one of the New Zealand's and Samoa's Top World
Bodybuilder achiever. PIBBA will hope to work in partnership
with Schools, Nutrition's, Health Organizations, Fitness
Industry, Educational Institutes, Employment and Funding
Agencies, Government Agents, Parents and pass Athletes to
assist current Athletes acquire skills and knowledge
necessary to deal and achieve successfully with the demands
of the modern and ever changing world.
Moving
into the New Millennium 2000, PIBBA's 4th Championship was
proven to be very successful with Mr. Sonny Schmidt as guest
poser, who is IFBB's 1995's Master Mr. Olympia and is the
first Pacific Islander to receive his pro-card. This year's
