The Pasefika Festival 2001: For the ninth year in a row is once again brought to you by the Auckland City Council, Pasifika Komiti and the Pacific people of Auckland, New Zealand. On Saturday 3rd March 2001 you will see, smell, taste, feel and hear the uniqueness of each Pacific island group.

Cultural Villages: Aim to portray the essence of each culture, by encouraging interactive participation in their own unique arts, crafts, performances, storytelling, ceremonial displays, and of course, the traditional way of cooking Polynesian food, such as a hangi (which is cooked beneath the earth) and a umu (cooked on top of the ground).

Come and visit our village:Aotearoa - Cook Islands - Fiji - Niue - Samoa - Tokelau - Tonga - Tuvalu & Kiripati. Pasifika Festival 2001 entertainment is hotter than ever! To entertain us are top Pacific Island performers, singers, dancers, comedians, actors and bands on four major stages: the Performing Arts Stage, the Cultural Stage, the Contemporary Stage and the LTSA Children’s Stage.

Contemporary Stage: Smooth new soul singers Adeaze featured on Lole’s new album Samoana will be performing this year, as will south Auckland rock band The Mercenaries. Also present will be Michelle Rounds, fresh from performing on the entertainment circuit in
Sydney. Australian TV icon Jay Lagai’aia will be joining Oscar Kightley, Eteuati Ete and friends to bring us ‘Whose ika line is it anyway?’.

You will also be able to hear all of the old favourites; King Kapisi & DJ Raw, Cydel, Dawn Raid, Che Fu, Lole and AKA Brown. Our national line-up includes the funk band from Wellington Origin to spice up the afternoon and from Christchurch, all-female rap group Sheelah Rock. Also from Christchurch we have the Pacific Underground Band, who performed the music for the successful Romeo & Tusi production.

Cultural Stage: Professional cultural performing group Ei Polinetia! Will be the group to watch out for on this stage. Recently arrived back in NZ, they stunned audiences in Spain and the far-eastern Pacific, Ei Polinetia! (see photos during the official opening of Pasifika Festival 2001) Represents the vibrancy and essence of pacific cultural performance. Other performers include the spectacular Tahitian

   
 
 
 
 

group Tahiti Ia Ora, the inspirational Penina O Le Kiona Sina, the marvelous Vaimutu String Band, the energetic Te Uila Boys and plenty of others! Also in the lineup is a showcase of local new-comers who featured in Pasifika Festival’s talent quest expressionz earlier in January.

LTSA Children’s Stage: Based in Western Springs Speedway, the LTSA Children’s stage will feature loads of interactive fun and activities. Plenty of giveaways happening on this stage with the Mai FM crew running the Hour of Paua featuring fun games, breakdancing and rap competitions. Also TV2’s What Now host, Anthony Samuels, will be there filming with the crew on the day. There’ll be Popo the Fairy and storytelling, Wesley School’s Wynrs Team will give us a soccer demonstration, there’ll also be young people giving aerobic and martial arts demonstrations. In the music department, keep an eye out for our Crossroads Guitar Duel, our newcomers who performed at the Pasifika Festival’s expressionz talent quest, will also be performing throughout the day. Also, the Vaimutu String Band features an 11 year old sensation on the ukelele! Don’t miss it!

Performing Arts Stage: Cooking up a storm will be the Pacific’s own Native Chef, alongside live poetry readings and comedy acts including The Naked Samoans who will be performing two sessions of the popular Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. Another major performer on this stage is the internationally-reknown Mika along with other local acts like Apasa (Samoan ballet). Music on this stage includes the unplugged sounds of Cydel performing Pacific Bleus and also features guitarist Kara Gordon with a set of Flamenco Polynesia plus much, much more talent.
