SONS OF CHARLIE PAORA’ DEBUT NATIONAL NZ TOUR |

“An evening to make the
spirits soar…generous, resounding and rare”. The Observer, UK
After a sell-out season at London’s prestigious Royal Court Theatre in
2004, the acclaimed The Sons of Charlie Paora tours New Zealand for the
first time.
Written by English actor and writer, Lennie James (24 Hour Party
People, Snatch, Cold Feet and most recently Sahara). The Sons of
Charlie Paora is one of New Zealand’s most successful theatre exports.
James came to New Zealand to spend a month with seven South Auckland
actors on the request of Massive Company director, Sam Scott (Shortland
Street director). Despite their diverse cultures and hemispheres a
strong connection was made and to this day James says The Sons of
Charlie Paora is one of his proudest projects.
The collaborative effort and profound connection made between James,
the actors and Massive Company inspired the gutsy and raw script which
followed.
“By listening to the actors stories I learnt growing up in South
Auckland isn’t that different to growing up in South London. People get
shot, you rely on friends and family for food and you have this really
strong sense of camaraderie.” Lennie James.
The Sons of Charlie Paora had two sell-out seasons in Auckland
(2002/03) and was performed at the Taranaki Festival (2003). It
reflects New Zealand’s rich multi cultural society and proves ‘kiwi’
stories translate internationally.
“Truly remarkable” The Observer, UK, 2004.
“…wove its charms and took the audience on a journey to the raw,
sometimes brutal, often poignant, funny, vital and ultimately humane
world of Mangere” NZ Herald, 2002
Set in a Mangere garage Sons of Charlie Paora is about a group of young
men who gather to acknowledge the passing of their mentor, father
figure and rugby coach Charlie Paora. Each of the “sons” has a story to
tell and a choice to make following his death. |

The tension heightens
when Charlie’s real son and daughter turn up. They all share a story
of love, loyalty, life, death and young men finding out what it
takes to grow up.
“Samantha Scott's production, with its hakas, hip-hop and
choreographed rugby triumphs, has a pounding vigour and catches
exactly the mixture of realism and ritual that is part of New
Zealand's mutli-culturalism” The Guardian, UK, February 2004.
The Sons of Charlie Paora brings together the talents and charisma
of Max Palamo (Ezra), who’s experience of spending two years in
prison was woven into the script, Foma’i Taito (Semo), Jason Webb
(Jackson), Joe Folau (Albie), Liston Rua (Miro), Wesley Dowdell
(Sonny) and Kiri Lightfoot (Sarah).
The national tour includes Gisborne (28-30 July), Napier (4-6
August), Wellington (9-13 August), Manukau (18 - 20 August),
Hamilton (25-27 August)
This is a story of love, loyalty, life and death.
The Sons of Charlie Paora will be at the Manukau TelstraClear
Pacific Centre from Thursday 18th August, Friday 19th August,
Saturday 20th August. You may contact Adelle Levi on (021)250-9079
