The
5th Waitakere Pacifica Living Arts Festival 2001, "is
another memorable display of what's becoming the showcase
for all that is best, new and exciting in performance, art
and crafts of the Pacific Island peoples in Waitakere City,
according to Mary Ama. Held at the Kelston Community Centre,
Auckland, between 30th April and 5th May 2001, organised by
the Pacific Island Advisory Board, sponsored by the
Waitakere City Council - Auckland and other major sponsors
to showcase both traditional and contemporary arts, crafts
and traditions.
The week long festival included a combined inter-denomination church
service on Sunday, and transforming the community centre to a
market-type atmosphere filled with school children and the public
partaking in the various demonstrations. Each day is mixed with
traditional dancing, performances, drumming, a fashion show, workshops
and an exhibition of visual arts and crafts from each Pacific group
represented in Waitakere City, a city that is now home to many Samoans,
Tongans, Cook Islanders, Niueans, Tuvaluans,
Tokelauans and Fijians.
Popular
workshops: Maori wood carving, Tongan 'tapa' display, Niuean
basket and hat weaving, Tuvaluan floral head-bands, drums of
Cook Islands, Samoan fashion & Tokelauan and Fijian handicrafts.
