Wellington’s unique children’s exhibition, theatre & events centre is celebrating Christmas 2001 in true Pacific Island style. Capital E is situated in Civic Square in the heart of New Zealand’s beautiful capital city and houses some of the finest children’s theatre, exhibitions and events in the country.
This is the third year of the popular ‘Christmas at Capital E’ exhibition which was first launched in 1999.
The 2001 Christmas exhibition focuses on experiencing Christmas in the Pacific Islands. On entering the exhibition space, you’ll discover many wonderful aspects of Pacific Island culture and celebration.
You’ll find Santa situated on a Palm Beach, who is only too happy to sit and chat with you youngsters as well as pose for a photo. Santa is available for photographs each day up until December 24th between 10:30am to 2:30pm weekdays and 10:30am to 3:30pm weekends.
The beach area is a great place not only to visit Santa, but also to have some fun in the sand. Buckets and spades are on hand as well as Santa’s own wobbly surfboard. The board is mounted on large springs to simulate a real-life, rocky surfboard ride.
Exotic murals painted by local artist Daniel Bell surround the exhibition. These depict village life, beach scenes, traditional sports and earth-oven cooking.
Children and adults can explore the exhibits together and discover some
of the fascinating and beautiful aspects of Pacific Island way of life.
As you roam through the village area you’ll discover a number of huts
which have information and activities on patterns, food and weaving.
Children can make their own Christmas card with inspiration from
Pacific Island prints, tapa design and patterns.
In the coral reef exhibit, children learn about some of the fishy inhabitants of coral reefs. Amongst the colourful murals is a selection activities and games. Magnetic fishing is amongst the most popular of these. Information and interactive games on reef ecology area also prove to be fun and informative.
A feature Christmas exhibit is a life-size depiction of the very first Christmas. The Elim International Christian Church in Wellington sponsors the Nativity scene that shows a beautiful display of the first Christmas decorated in Pacific Island décor. The manger is surrounded with precious tapas, fine mats and artifacts.
As a regular weekend attraction, Capital E has been hosting Pacific Island Cultural groups each Saturday. Our final shows will be on the 22nd of December. The 11:30 show brings you entertainment from ‘Pick Pack’, a performing group from PIC Newtown. At 2pm Capital E hosts the very popular Cook Island group ’E.K.K.A.’ from the Cook Island Christian Church in Porirua. Their colourful performance includes a selection of Cook Island drumming, dance and song. A performance not to be missed!
Christmas at Capital E is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Christmas with all the family in a beautiful Pacific Island environment. It’s ideal for children of all ages to learn and explore the wonders of the Pacific and to celebrate together the joy of the Christmas season. The exhibition is open until the 24th of December 2001.
