Lovers
of Samoan comedy can now add a new CD to their collection
with the release of Eteuati Ete's CD 'Ete - Live at the
Metro.' The CD is a live recording of Eteuati's one-man show
'My Pele from Magele' ('My Sweetheart From Mangere')
performed before a packed audience at the Metro Theatre in
Mangere, Auckland, last year.
The
Wellington-based comedian goes under the stage name 'Ete'
and was the first Samoan to appear on New Zealand's top
comedy tv-show 'Pulp Comedy'. He was born in Samoa but grew
up in New Zealand and draws his humour from his personal
experiences.
"It's
fantastic because I offer new and fresh material which other
comedians who are not Samoan can't use," says
Ete.
Producing
a CD was something Ete never set out to do, and he says it
came about purely by accident.
"A
good friend of mine who is the manager of Radio 531PI came
and saw my show in Auckland city central last year," recalls
Ete. "After the show he came up to me and said I should bring the show
to South Auckland and that he would promote it. I agreed and performed
two shows in August last year. We recorded the shows to see if they
would be useful for radio. The quality of the recording and the
audience response was so good though
that we decided to release it as a CD."
The
show is the hilarious story of a young man who comes to New
Zealand in search of a young woman he sees holidaying in
Samoa. It turns out though that the young woman is really a
fa'afafine (transsexual) and the young man is deported for
overstaying.
Ete
plans to take the show to Samoa in September with the
long-term view of touring it in Hawai'i and America's mainland. After full house performances in Auckland and
Wellington, Ete will head south to Christchurch and
Dunedin.
Ete
says his success as a comic is something that comes
naturally to Pacific Island people.
"I
want to encourage other young Samoans to get into comedy,"
says Ete. "It's great for our people because we're all
natural comedians. There's always someone in the kitchen
telling a funny story and it's those people who have the
ability to make that step up to the stage".
