Japan has officially handed over a new 12 room school building for
Faleula Primary School built with a grant assistance worth $110,406
Australian dollars or $228,347 Samoan tala.
The “Project for Reconstruction of Faleula Primary School” was in
response to a request by the school committee of Faleula Primary School
in March 2003. The Government of Samoa has undertaken to improve
education facilities as part of key strategic outcomes “Improved
Education Standards” contained in the “Statement of Economic Strategy
2002-2004”. Subsequently with the completion of this Project Japan
hopes to contribute to Samoa’s national development framework.
Mr Jun Sasaki of the Embassy of Japan in Wellington attended the
ceremony with Prime Minister Hon Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi and
Minister of Trade Mr Hans Joachim Keil. The Minister of Education Hon
Fiame Naomi officially received the keys from the builder and cut the
ribbon to open the new school building. President of the Faleula School
Committee Solamalemalo Keneti Sio spoke on behalf of his committee with
the Reverend Fili Matalavea, EFKS, conducting the prayer service.
In 2003, Japan hosted the 3rd Japan-Pacific Islands Forum Summit
meeting in Okinawa, Japan. During this summit meeting Japan stressed
through the “Joint Action Plan”, Japan’s initiatives with members of
the Pacific Islands Forum to work to improve education through the
rebuilding of school infrastructure.
Japan’s
Participation in the Colombo Plan on October 6th, 1954 marked the beginning of Japan’s
Official Development Assistance. For over five decades Japan has
significantly contributed to promoting the economic and social development
of developing countries.
The Government of Japan by Cabinet decision has designated October 6th as
“International Cooperation Day” in order to increase public awareness and
participation in international cooperation among the Japanese people. In
commemorating its 50th year of involvement, Japan is assessing its efforts
so far and considering the future global role of its ODA.
