SAMOA
STRENGTHENS TIES WITH GREECE, ITALY AND EGYPT |

Three ambassadors have
presented their credentials to Member of Council of Deputy Tuiatua
Tupua Tamasese Efi on behalf of the Samoa Head of State, His Highness
Malietoa Tanumafili II at the Head of State’s residence at Vailele.
The first letter of credence was presented by the Greek Ambassador,
Evangelos Damianakis. Samoa’s relation with Greece was established in
1981. Evangelos Damianakis said that both countries are tourist
destinations.
“I shall spare no efforts to promote and further expand the relations
that happily exist between the two countries,” said Evangelos in his
speech. “My Government will also spare no efforts to pursue a policy
dedicated to peace, respect for international law, international
legality, democracy and human rights and strengthening of international
cooperation.”
Greece as a member of the European Union places particular emphasis to
the prosperity and well-being of the people of Samoa and their ability
to improve their economic situation.
Greece, he said, is proud for the way she conducted the Olympic Games
of Athens 2004, where more than two hundred countries, including Samoa,
participated, gaining respectability worldwide.
Evangelos holds a Degree in Law from the University of Athens. He
worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before accrediting to work
in Greek Embassies in Yerevan, Lumumbashi and Sydney. He is married and
has two sons.
The second letter of credence was presented by Italy’s Ambassador to
Samoa, Liana Marolla. She conveyed warm wishes from the President of
the Republic of Italy, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and the Italian people.
Relations between the two countries have existed since 1987.
She was Italy’s Ambassador to the Cook Islands in 2004, New Zealand in
2003 and has worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Consul in
Paris.
She holds a Degree in Political Science from the Rome University. She
was also awarded Commander of the Republic of Italy. “We attribute

belongs for a reform of the United Nations,” she said.
“We value highly what Samoa is doing in the region and in the framework
of the UN and of the Pacific Forum.”
Her credential presentation was also attended by the Cafarelli Family
based in Samoa, whose son has taken over Samoa’s Honorary Consul to the
Government of Italy.
Tuiatua in his response recalled Italy’s mutual cooperation with Samoa
on sustainable development and climate change.
The final credential presentation was His Excellency Mohamed Moustafa
Mohamed Tawfik. He is Egypt’s new Ambassador to Samoa. Mohamed’s
presence has strengthened further ties of the two nations on
international political and economical issues.
He holds a Degree in Civil Engineering from Cairo University and is
married with two sons His previous postings included the Embassy of the
Arab Republic of Egypt in Washington D.C. and Harare. He also served
Egyptian Permanent Mission to the UN and other international
organizations in Geneva.
Samoa’s vision sees improvement in trade and investment fields,
enhanced bilateral ties and more cooperation especially in the tourism
area.
Tuiatua said Samoa’s significant role in international security is
joining peacekeeping missions in the Middle East. Tuiatua sent best
wishes to all three ambassadors as they take up their terms in office.
