THE SCORPION KING

By Angelynne Enoka

When 'The Scorpion King' action film opened in April, it had a special attraction especially for the people in Samoa. Playing main role was 'The Rock', whose real name is Dwayne Douglas Johnson, grandson of former wrestler Chief Fanene Peter Maivia.

'The Rock' is one of the most successful wrestlers in the new age WWF, with a huge following worldwide. His one line 'Can you smell what the Rock is cookin' is a popular phrase used extensively by youths when it comes to sports.

The Rock's facial expressions and body language are mimicked by most of his young fans. The raised eyebrow and the slight turn of the head with half closed right eye reflect the image of power, superiority and pre-eminence to a lot of children. Anything that can be associated with The Rock; it could be sunglasses, or the way he talks, with powerful pronunciation of words, conjures-up heroic images for a lot of youngsters.

His debut appearance on the big screen in the hit move 'The Return of the Mummy' earned 'The Rock' a place in history as a film star. Now staring in his own action movie, 'The Rock' is set for the big screen.

'The Scorpion King', has broken box office records around the world, with a few thousand of viewers queuing at the Magic Cinema in Apia. The first screening was for special invitations to members of parliament, the business community before it was opened to the public on Thursday morning.

Exclusive to the Magic Cinema in Apia were 'The Scorpion King' posters autographed by 'The Rock', with the headings "To My People of Samoa". The village 2 cinema was opened to the locals with screening times every two hours, running from 6PM until Midnight.

'The Rock' is proud of his Samoan connection like fellow Samoan actors Jay Laga'aia who also visits Samoa frequently and Tia Carere, a well known actress who is in and out of Apia every couple of years.

It is a proud moment for the people of Samoa to have another 'super star' whose family line can be traced back to this small island paradise. A hero that reflects passion and an ideal model to some; a sense of manliness, compulsion to act, to live and to reign with a strong heart as a hero for his country.
