By Angelynne Enoka

Westfield Style Pasifika celebrated 12th years with the 2005 Westfield Style Pasefika Fashion Award being opened by Prime Minister Rt. Honorable Helen Clark.

The Westfield Style Pasifika Spectacular is directed and produced by Stan Wolfgramm of Drum Productions; features hundreds of entertainers and models in a potent mixture of fashion tinged with a taste of the South Pacific and combined with a showcase of music, dance and culture. It is the largest fashion award to be held every year,” according to the organisers.

This melting pot that is Westfield Style Pasifika makes it unique in the world and an extraordinary celebration of the talent and cultures that are New Zealand.

The highlight of the night was the deliciously constructed garment in the style of Japanese Kimono, combined with Samoan natural resources entitled ‘Cocomono’. Made from cleverly conceived coconut shell rings by Auckland designer Lindah Lepou. Lindah was also a finalist in three categories of the Westfield Style Pasifika Fashion Awards and a winner in two of them.

The Creative NZ Body Art category wowed the crowds, especially the stunning body paint by Phil Du Chard. The ‘Cut Above Pasifika Evening Wear’ designer Natalia Choe amazed the crowd with her garment “Pacific Princess”.

Categories in the Westfield Style Pasifika Fashion Award were Three Piece Collection; Urban Street Wear; Men’s Wear; Evening Wear; Bridal Wear; Parent and Child; Traditionally Inspired; Asia Pasifika, Pasifika Hero and Painted Body Art.

The originality and quality of the 85 finalists that were selected from almost 300 entries from all over New Zealand, Pacific Islands and Australia was fantastic.

Previous judges Liz Mitchell, Frances Hooper and Denise L’Estrange–Corbet from World and Marilyn Kohlase from Creative New Zealand, were joined by the Oscar winning ‘Lord of the Rings’ costume designer Ngila Dickson and Chris Cherry from Workshop.

This year, the entertainment went from hip hop, to opera, to classical, to pop, to cultural from the established talents of Tai Royale and Sir Howard Morrison with the Auckland Pacific Gospel Choir and included Feelstyle. Other acts included Jamoa Jam, Adeaze, MIB, Pacific Tamure and Dream Lovers.
