JAWS Statement on
Radio Journalist Ban
09 June 2007 -
Source: Journalists Association of Samoa (JAWS)
The Journalists Association of [Western] Samoa as an
advocate of freedom to information and freedom of
the media is taking a firm stance against the recent
ban placed on two Radio Journalists in Samoa.
Journalists as carriers of information and
informants of the public should have the right to
report on any issue that is of public interest,
journalists should also have the freedom to attend
Press Conferences without prejudice or
discrimination of the host.
By denying Journalists the right to report on
issues, the public is being denied the right to
know. As Journalists we have a duty to the people of
Samoa to inform them of events, issues and
happenings on a daily basis.
In saying this we recognise that Journalists should
remain unbiased, impartial and accurate in our
reports. All Journalists of Samoa should adhere to
the JAWS Code of Ethics to ensure fair and just
reporting in Samoa.
The recent ban on two Radio Journalists is a direct
threat to freedom of the media in Samoa which is one
of the founding pillars our democracy.
JAWS urges the Media owner involved to review such a
decision for the sake of media freedom.
As Samoa celebrates its 45th year of Independence
JAWS echoes recent healthy comments made by the
Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi referred
to the maturity of our democracy and the media as
one of its vital institutions. JAWS agrees that the
control of media freedom is an
incident of the past.
JAWS will always stand and strive for Freedom of the
Media in Samoa and worldwide.
Faafetai
The statement was in regards to the recent ban
placed on two Radio Journalists by the owner of
their Radio Station, Radio Polynesia, from covering
Press Conferences by Opposition MP Saleimoa Vaai
Asiata. This was the response from JAWS.

People welcomes back
floral float competition
06 June 2007 -
Source: eventpolynesia.com
It has been a while since a float competition was
seen at the independence celebrations, and last
week's celebration saw 15 floats participating in
the parade.
The floats was organised in the spirit of
independence with various floats re-enacting scenes
from the first independence back in 1962. Pictures
of all the former Prime Ministers including the
current one Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi were all
depicted in pictures and slogans hanging from the
floats. One float used coconut husk to create a huge
picture of the late Head of State Malietoa
Tanumafili II.
The float from the village of Faatoia depicted the
different changes Samoa went through from 1962 to
the present.
Other floats depicted the first house of parliament
and the monuments around Mulinuu, women as the main
strength behind families. Samoa's "measina" the fine
mats were also show-cased.
A depiction of the 1981 Public Servants Association
strike which saw the HRPP come into power as a new
government brought back memories for some of the
pubic servants that took part in the strike.
The float parades was led by the Police band down
Beach Road.
Even the ANZ Bank joined in the fun, with the South
Pacific Games mascot, Mana dancing her way around
town to the delight of the young ones.
Representatives of organisations that participated
in the float competition said that more floats
should be encouraged as this was one way that
history can be taught to the younger ones.

La-o-Samoa, new king
of the fautasi regatta
05 June 2007 -
Source: eventpolynesia.com
Favourites to win the fautasi race was either
Segavao Premo II, rowed by the Don Bosco boys,
Tavaesina or Tamarina from the village of Apia.
These are three of the fautasi that have dominated
regattas in recent years and a close race was again
predicted.
However, with the exception of Segavao who gave
La-o-Samoa a good head start, the other two boats
failed to perform well, as La-o-Samoa rowed away to
claim the crown as the new king of the sea.
La-o-Samoa, from the village of Lepea only started
racing last year and this year saw them racing away
from the veteran fautasis as she rode with the tides
to claim first place in the fautasi regatta. Segavao
took second place with another newcomer, Matamatagi
from Satitoa Aleipata claiming third place.
The race between Matamatagi and Tavaesina, who came
fourth, was a spectacular one to watch as they
matched each other in strength and speed.
Fetu-o-le-Moana claimed fifth place with Little Rina
settling for sixth place. Pafalo from Toamua,
formerly known as Laau ole Saualii came seventh with
Tamarina finishing in eighth place. Bluebird from
Vaiala settled at number nine with Laumua o Tumua in
tenth place.
This year's race again started from Faleula and
finished at Apia harbour.

Person of the week:
Michi Passi, Designer
03 June 2007 -
Source: eventpolynesia.com
Mikaele Passi, better known as Michi, is a name that
will soon be on everyone's tongue. Michi is a
designer by profession and is currently working at
the Gardenia's Boutique. But her career in the world
of fashion had its tough moments at the beginning.
Michi for starters never went to any design or
fashion school to learn the art of sewing and
designing. In fact, the first signs of her talents
was noted by his mother, who is a tailor. Michi's
mother worked from home and Michi been a very
curious person not only kept a watchful eye on his
mother's designs and patterns. He also learned to
operate a sewing machine.
Later, he helped do some cuttings for his mother. It
was from there that Michi started taking an interest
in sewing. Gradually, he started clipping away on
materials and papers.
Michi's big break came when he started wearing some
of the clothes he sewed. His friends noticed Michi's
styles and started begging for him to make some of
their own clothes. Michi was only glad to do so,
until one of his relatives employed him to sew and
design some of puletasi and clothes for the
relatives shop.
Michi also took time out from work to make clothes
for special occasions such as the Miss Samoa
pageant, Miss Tutti Frutti and various events.
The last Miss Faafafine saw Michi model some of the
dresses he made himself, including a gown he wore.
Michi's gown not only won the best gown category,
but he also walked away with the very first official
Miss National Faafafine crown.
For the past three years, Michi has worked at
Gardenia's Boutique at Saleufi.
He has managed to create some of the latest designs
that women would die for.
Michi credits his mother for his ta'slents and
although he would love to see himself running his
own business in the future, he content with what he
has now.
