Team Samoa fine tunes final preparations for Games

It is less than two months away or just over 60 days before the opening of the 13th South Pacific Games in Apia in August. Besides Samoa's preparations as hosts, the rest of the Pacific Island countries are also preparing strongly. Athletes and officials that make up Team Samoa will be depending on the support of the country to get them through their final preparations and fine tuning.

The past week saw the latest in a series of bi-weekly meetings between the Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegoi and Team Samoa management and officials, which started earlier this year. Tuilaepa was updated by management on the progress of each individual sport preparing for the games. He reiterated Government's support and for officials to seek the required help that is needed to ensure optimum performance.

The one matter that all Team Samoa officials requested was that of uniforms for Team Samoa. Samoa Football (Soccer) Federation president, Toleafoa Tautulu Roebeck voiced this concern on behalf of the other teams that "All is well with the preparations except for funding to buy uniforms for the athletes and teams."

Another matter raised by Samoa Netball and Samoa Weightlifting officials, was the need for and availability of fields and gyms for their final preparations.

The above requests were all relayed to both the PM and to South Pacific Games Authority (SPGA) Chief Executive Officer, Fonoti Etuale, so that these requests can be taken care of now and ahead of time.

The PM thus ended the meeting with his usual words of encouragement and motivation to all the officials to make sure all the athletes are on track, and to ensure that all athletes have a strong heart and strive to compete to their best capability in their respective sports.

Next week, Samoa will be opening additional facilities and this time they include the main Sports Center at Apia Park and the fourth Gym located at the National University of Samoa (NUS) at Papaigalagala.

Afega calls for peace and unity in Tuamasaga
18 June 2007 - Source: eventpolynesia.com

Senior orators (Matua o Tuamasaga) have called upon the Aiga ma Tula o Faletuamasaga to maintain peace and unity after they were not invited to attend  the bestowal of the Malietoa title on Papalii Faamausili Moli Malietoa.

According to Fata Pemila and Maulolo Faavevela, their priority is to ensure that peace and unity remains within Tuamasaga. According to the orators, they were told by Sia Kato Ulu, who was the spokesperson on the day of the title bestowal, that the ceremony was postponed until the Malietoa family settled their differences.

By 9pm Wednesday night, alii ma faipule of Afega dispersed after Sia told them the ceremony was postponed. However, they were surprised when they heard gunshots early Thursday morning, marking the beginning of the ceremony.

Fata and Maulolo said that the holder of the Malietoa title is invalid because Tuamasaga was not there to perform the ceremony.

According to Fata and Pemila, Sia had no right to confer the papa o Malietoa as it was not his duty to do so. This is the honour that belongs to Tuisamau. Sia and Auimatagi had betrayed Tuisamau according to the orators.

When asked for his opinion, Sia said that Tuisamau was stupid in thinking that he (Sia) had no right to do what he did. Sia did not want to comment further.

In the meantime, other members of the Malietoa clan are still fighting their claims in the Lands and Titles Court.

Tuamasaga consists of villages from Tufulele to Laulii and Saanapu to Siumu. Afega believes that if Tuamasaga was notified, Samoa would have witnessed one of the biggest events in Samoa's modern history.

Person of the Week: Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi
17 June 2007 - Source: eventpolynesia.com

As predicted and confirmed last Friday when parliament met, Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi was unanimously voted as the next Head of State of the Independent State of Samoa.

Tuiatua is a former Prime Minister of Samoa and currently a member of the Council of Deputies. He is remembered though for his time as a parliamentarian and being the outspoken Leader of the Opposition, the now defunct Samoa National Development Party (SNDP).

Tuiatua takes over from the late Head of State, Malietoa Tanumafili II who passed away last month.

Since his death, speculation was rife on who would be the next head of state. There were rumours that four names had been submitted as candidates, including a member of the ruling political party, the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP).

Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, said he wants Tuiatua to take up office as soon as possible, and he does not see any reason to delay the official programme for the induction ceremony.

Samoa Democratic United Party (SDUP) leader Asiata Saleimoa Vaai said that their support for Tuiatua was 100%.

Tuiatua showed his gratitude to parliament when interviewed. He knew it was not an easy decision to make as there were also others considered, and he is humbled by the honour of leading the country.

Malietoa ruled for 45 years during the post-independence era. He held the title of Head of State for life, but an amendment made to the constitution means future Head of States will now serve a maximum five year term.

Parliament will reconvene next week and the Prime Minister is expected to make an official announcement regarding the ordination of the newly elected Head of State.
