NEW ZEALAND: Champion Hip-Hop crew to perform at
Waiata Maori Awards
World Champion hip-hop crew ReQuest will take
its unique style of dance to Hawke’s Bay on
Sunday, where its dancers will perform at an
event supporting the National Waiata Maori
Awards.
The Auckland-based group will be the guest
performer at the National Maori Music Awards Hip
Hop Dance Competition and will also help judge
the competing dancers and crews.
The all-girl ReQuest crew this year won the
varsity category of the world championships in
Las Vegas and the World Supremacy Battlegrounds
competition in Australia.
One of the group’s performers and its
choreographer Parris Goebel will join well-known
hip-hop dancer Justin Haiu on the judging panel
at the competition, which will be held at the
Hawke’s Bay Opera House in Hastings on Sunday,
September 12.
Parris will replace Auckland’s Dziah Dance
Company director Billie Paea, who has recently
moved to Australia and is unable to help judge
the competition.
Parris, 18, says she and the rest of the ReQuest
crew are looking forward to their first
performance in the Bay.
And there are a few key areas she’ll be looking
for when she sits down to judge the competitors
with Justin.
“I’ll be looking for that x-factor, velocity and
timing but most of all I’ll be looking at how
people are enjoying themselves, that’s the most
important,” she said.
Parris is coming to Hawke’s Bay equipped with
advice for competitors who are likely to want to
know the secret behind ReQuest’s success.
“My biggest piece of advice would be to keep
learning and keep striving to be the best dancer
you can be.
“Take every opportunity you can to perform,
whether it be at a big event or a small one, for
the experience, so you can be seen and show the
work you’ve been putting into it,” she said.
Waiata Maori Awards Hip-Hop Dance Competition
event organiser Ellison Huata said securing
ReQuest is a big coup for the event.
“I had seen them perform last year and had
wanted to book them for this event. It’s
important to have them perform at our
competition because it will show people you can
have a career in the arts.
“Dance has brought them success internationally,
they are the world champions now. They were
happy to perform for us and having Parris on the
judging panel is a bonus,” she said.
Waiata Maori Awards 2010
• The awards will include the Maori Music Expo,
September 9 and 10, where modern and traditional
musicians and composers will offer their advice
and experience in a series of workshops and
forums.
• A fashion show will be held on the evening of
September 9, mixing live music with work from
prominent Hawke’s Bay designers.
• The awards ceremony will be held on the
evening of September 10, broadcast by Radio
Kahungunu through the iwi station network and by
Maori Television.
• A hip-hop dance competition will be held on
September 12, starting at 4pm. Judges will
include Justin Haiu and Parris Goebel. The dance
competition awards will be held at the
conclusion of the event.

AUSTRALIA: More than a piece of paper
Source:
Australia-Pacific Technical College
Ask APTC graduate Victor Christopher if he feels
that the Certificate III in Painting and
Decorating is "just a piece of paper" and he
will quickly reply, "NO, it has changed my
life!"
After the recent graduation ceremony in Suva,
Victor thought he should make a copy of the
certificate and get it laminated for
safekeeping. The manager of the printing shop
was very impressed by the certificate and
Victor's qualification, and immediately asked
him for a quote on repainting the office and
some decorative finishes on signboards.
Painting and Decorating Trainer, Michael
Farrugia said, "This is a prime example of how
having the Certificate III can open doors for
APTC graduates. Victor Christopher was presented
his hard-earned certificate by the Australian
Acting High Commissioner to Fiji, Ms Judith
Robinson. Victor later told me that he couldn't
sleep at all the night before the graduation,
and that his family was so proud, that they made
him a salusalu (lei), and celebrated all night
after the graduation ceremony."
Michael reports that many Certificate III
Painting and Decorating graduates have already
registered and started their own small
businesses, including Worksmart Contractors,
Jetison Home Improvements and OneTalk Painters.
"So is the Certificate III just a piece of
paper? At APTC we would have to agree with
Victor in saying APTC graduates are improving
their earnings, opportunities and life styles as
a result of their training and qualifications,"
concluded Michael.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA: China assists Papua New Guinea
wind power project
Source:
Regulación Eólica con Vehículos Eléctricos
The Duke of York Islands in East New Britain,
one of a group of islands in Papua New Guinea
facing the threat of a rise in the sea level
because of global warming, is practising what
most just preach.
The islanders, with the help of their MP and
Treasurer Sir Rabbie Namaliu and China, will
seek power from an alternate source - wind
turbines.
Sir Rabbie was in Duke of York to open three new
projects that are jointly funded by China and
Papua New Guinea government. They are a double
classroom, a new school library and a pilot wind
farm project.
The wind energy project is jointly funded by the
Chinese and the national government. "This could
not be better timed. Today there is a worldwide
focus on the impact of climate change and what
can be done to reduce and manage its impact on
daily lives."
He said the APEC [Asia-Pacific Economic
Cooperation forum] meeting in Vietnam and the
Melbourne meeting of treasurers and finance
ministers had the issue of global warming high
on the agenda.
"This community already knows what one of the
impacts of global warming and climate change is
- rising sea levels. We can play a part by
focusing on environmentally friendly energy
sources and few are more environmentally
friendly than wind power."
Sir Rabbie praised China's bilateral aid to PNG,
adding that all of the aid projects and
programmes China had funded have had strong
practical value. "The majority are in rural
communities, some are in agriculture, while
others are in areas such as education and health
care."

VANUATU:
Vanuafoot now on local station
Source:
Oceania Football Confederation Press Release
Fans in Vanuatu will now have football news
brought right into their living rooms through
local radio station FM 107.
Saby Natonga, managing director and owner of FM
107, has given the thumbs up for the Vanuafoot
show to broadcast the latest football
developments live on air.
Natonga, who is also the Vanuatu Football
Federation (VFF) vice-president, expects the new
agreement to bring news and information about
the game to people of all walks of life
throughout the country.
VFF media officer Harry Atisson has welcomed the
good news and is thankful to FM 107 manager
Arthur Knight, owner Natonga and the station’s
staff for providing an opportunity for Vanuafoot
to be broadcast.
Atisson has already made the most of the
arrangement.
Live football updates have been aired daily at
11.45am, while live coverage of last month’s OFC
Futsal Championship in Fiji was also provided.
Vanuatu football also has a programme on fellow
FM station Paradise FM, which airs each day at
9am and has a further session every Saturday
from 10am. A talkback show is also aired every
Thursday evening for an hour from 7pm.
As well as the radio coverage, VFF also have a
television presence (a half-hour TV programme
screens every Wednesday at 8pm) and a website,
available at www.vanuafoot.vu
There is also a full page dedicated to football
in the Vanuatu Infos weekly newspaper, which is
published each Friday.
Atisson says he has done his best to make sure
football news is distributed freely throughout
the country but that he needs more freelance
journalists to help him carry out the task.
To this end, he is thankful to Mathew Temar for
taking time to help update the Vanuafoot website
and Sam Obed for editing the Vanuafoot TV
programme.
