NEW ZEALAND: Schools To Wing In For BNZ Condor
Sevens
Source:
BNZ Condor Sevens Press Release
Kelston Boys High School has a difficult
end-of-year assignment when they defend the BNZ
Condor Sevens against the rest of New Zealand in
Auckland next month.
Kelston, who beat cross-town rivals Mt Albert
Grammar School 26-17 a year ago, is pitted
against rugby powerhouses New Plymouth BHS, St
Patrick's College (Silverstream) and Nelson
College in Pool A of the 25th running of the
national secondary schools rugby sevens.
The draw sees twelve schools from the North
Island join four from the Mainland in a true
national championship that features a minimum of
a dozen ‘north v south’ clashes. The 16 schools
qualified through a series of regional
tournaments around New Zealand and BNZ Head of
Sponsorship Ross Halpin says the bank is proud
to get behind one of New Zealand’s great
passions.
“New Zealand’s high-school rugby is an
undisputed breeding ground for producing some of
the country’s top athletes, and with the BNZ
Condor Sevens we see a way to discover the next
wave of Sevens superstars,” Mr Halpin said.
“The inclusion of Rugby Sevens in the 2016
Olympics shows the rise of this game, and is
going to give the sport greater prominence on
the global stage. It’s a sport New Zealand has
consistently excelled at.”
MAGS has a tradition of excellence at the Condor
Sevens, having won it three times and been in
the Cup final six of the last seven years. MAGS
turned the tables on Kelston to win the Auckland
qualifier in August and will look to take that
form into Pool B where they take on Rotorua BHS,
Napier BHS and Otago BHS.
Six-time winners Wesley College square off
against Feilding HS, Rosmini College and
Southland BHS in Pool C while Pool D features
Hamilton BHS, Whangarei BHS, Auckland Grammar
School and Shirley BHS from Christchurch.
In addition to the quest for the prestigious
Condor Cup, which was first held aloft by Sacred
Heart College captain Craig Innes in 1986, the
192 players will be vying for places in the
tournament team and an opportunity to train with
New Zealand Sevens coach Gordon Tietjens.
The College Rifles RFC in Auckland hosts the
feast of schoolboy action on Sunday 4 December
starting at 8:45 am. The Remuera club was
recently the venue for exhibition matches in the
presence of IOC President Jacques Rogge, in
recognition of the sport's acceptance into the
Olympic Games in Rio 2016.
The four pools of four will be followed after
lunch by the knockout phases with the final of
the BNZ Condor Sevens scheduled for 3:40 in the
afternoon.

SAMOA: Vaitele Soi Continues Knock Out
Performance
Source:
eventpolynesia.com
Samoa cruiserweight champion Satiamaalii Vaitele
Soi delivered another knock out performance in
the main event of the Glozier Promotion in
Auckland on Friday night. The 54 seconds TKO win
by Soi in the first round has now taken his
professional record to 19 fights, 19 wins with
14 wins by way of knock out.
Soi is part of the Samoan professional boxing
team currently training in Auckland thanks to Dr
Anthony Lovat, founder and managing director on
behalf of OPRO who donated £5,000
(equivalent of $8,987.76 NZD) to help get the
Samoan team to New Zealand.
Dr Lovat was made aware of Team Samoa’s plight
during a recent meeting with Lauaki Freddie
Tuilagi who acts as manager for Manu Samoa wing
Alesana Tuilagi and Engalnd centre Manusamoa
Tuilagi. Dr Lovat was keen to pay both Alesana's
and Manu's rugby world cup fines but, as these
had already been settled, OPRO made the donation
to the Samoa professional boxing development
being supported by the Tuilagi brothers.
Mr. Pa’u Edwin Puni of boxing company Event
Polynesia confirms, “The donation from OPRO has
enabled Soi, four other Samoan boxers and three
Samoan trainers to take part in a special
training program in Auckland this week.”
Next week, Samoan boxers Faimasasa Tavui, Tony
Iapesa and Michael Fonoti and trainers Asiata
Napoleon Stanley and Ofisa Vili will travel to
Tahiti to take part in the Polynesia
Professional Boxing League pro-am promotion on
Friday 25th November, while boxer Oli Filimaua
and trainer Leapai Richard Brown heads to Fiji
to participate in the Wild West Boxing Promotion
on
Saturday 26th November.
Team Samoa returns to Apia in time for the Samoa
Pro Am fights on Thursday 1st December which
will feature a Fiji vs Samoa match up.
Following Soi’s win, he is now in line to fight
New Zealand number two Muyoyo Mensah in a WBO
Asia Pacific showdown in March next year.

AMERICA SAMOA: Meeting in American Samoa on
marine sanctuary hears strong opposition
A public meeting in American Samoa on the plan
to expand the Fagatele Bay National Marine
Sanctuary heard strong opposition against it.
The meeting last night was the first public
hearing on the draft management plan which the
Federal government released last month.
Fear of more federal control and losing fishing
grounds which means loss of livelihoods for some
families were some of the main reasons that
opponents cited.
Several were outraged at not being informed
about the plan in advance.
One resident from the village of Vaitogi, one of
the areas of water included in the expansion
plan, Peter Tinitali, says limiting fishing at
Fogama’s to only line and hook is absurd.
He said that means other methods of fishing such
as freediving and netting would not be an
option.

Tokelau.New Zealand Post helps deliver a
Christmas tradition for the people of Tokelau
New Zealand Post is set to solidify its place as
one of the leading producers of stamps in the
southern hemisphere, with the release of a set
of four Christmas stamps for the people of
Tokelau.
In September this year New Zealand Post entered
into a five year contract to design, produce and
distribute stamps for the government of Tokelau.
The Christmas stamps and an accompanying First
Day Cover which go on sale today are the first
fruits of this new alliance.
“New Zealand Post is viewed as one of the
leading postal administrators in the world, with
extensive capabilities. We also have a
successful track record in utilising stamps to
represent our nation’s unique culture, heritage
and national identity,” Ivor Masters, Head of
New Zealand Post’s stamps business says.
“As well as producing all of the current
official New Zealand postage stamps, two years
ago we won an international tender to design,
produce and distribute stamps for the island
nation of Niue.
“Tokelau is the latest place to make use of our
expertise in the production and delivery of
stamps, and we welcome them to our extended
family.
“We’re delighted to be working with the people
of Tokelau, given the incredibly close
relationship between our two countries and the
strong Tokelauan community in New Zealand..
“In this instance we’re starting with something
quite traditional - a set of four Christmas
stamps for Tokelau - featuring bold colours and
clear designs which represent traditional
Christmas decorations like bells and golden
balls.
“They come in four denominations - 40c, 45c,
$1.40 and $2.00 - and include the Tokelau phrase
for Merry Christmas - which is Manuia te
Kilihimahi.
“We’re really pleased to be working with Tokelau,
and look forward to many successful stamp
releases over the next five years,” Ivor Masters
said.
The new Tokelau Christmas 2011 stamp range go on
sale today - Wednesday 16 November - and can be
ordered from http://www.nzpost.co.nz/stamps or
by phoning 0800 STAMPS (782 677).
