AROUND THE WORLD: Te Vaka NEWS

Te Vaka Press Release
Dear Friends,
I apologise for the lack of communication, we
have been very busy. Te Vaka has been away on
tour again - this time to Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Audiences in both countries were very excited to
see the band perform and the concerts were all
packed with very enthusiastic audiences. In
Taiwan it was very interesting and exciting for
the band as they had the opportunity to go
out to the villages to meet with the indigenous
Tribes of Taiwan and explore the Austronesian
connection. It has been discovered that
Polynesians, more than likely, started their
journey to Polynesia from Taiwan and yes there
are definitely some similarities in the culture,
language and the people. Te Vaka and the
indigenous tribes had lots of fun sharing art,
music and dance
and performed together at the 'Dance and Soundz
of Austronesia concert' in Taitung.
Have you heard the latest Te Vaka CD - OLATIA?

multi-instrumentalist Foa'i remains a potent
songwriting force. "

fine release by Te Vaka that we will happily be
playlisting, and of course charting" CIUT-FM
Radio Toronto Te Vaka now has 5 CDs and 2 DVDs.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA: Linking
Sexual and Reproductive Health in Papua New
Guinea
Source:
UNFPA
When Athaliah Bagoi was only ten years old she
thought her mother was going to die.“My mother
delivered my third brother, and she started
bleeding two weeks after delivery. She was
nearly dead,” Bagoi explains. “They carried her
on a stretcher, and it really made me scared.
She lost a lot of blood -- she was so weak. One
of my aunties had to breastfeed my two-week-old
brother.”
The family contacted a plane that transported
the girl’s mother from their remote village in
Papua New Guinea to the capital Port Moresby,
where she was treated and eventually got better.
The experience left an indelible impression on
the young girl. She knew that day that she
wanted to grow up to save other women’s lives.
She realized her dream. But after nine years
working as a nurse, she decided to devote
herself full time to being a midwife. “I saw it
was important to be a midwife, because there
were so many women who were having
complications,” she says. “I wanted to help
other women.” .

SOLOMON ISLANDS:
Pacific media celebrate World Media Freedom Day
Source:
Islands Business News
While Fiji authorities have deported Fiji Times
publisher, Evan Hannah out of the country,
another Australian media executive removed in
February this year will be chief guest at World
Press Freedom Day celebrations in Solomon
Islands next week.
Russell Hunter has been invited by the Media
Association of Solomon Islands (MASI) to be
chief guest at celebrations in Honiara,
alongside Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua.
Mr Hunter, publisher of the Fiji Sun newspaper
was forcibly expelled to Australia for what the
interim government claimed then that he was a
threat to national. The newspaper had published
a series of articles on tax evasion allegations
against interim finance minister, Mahendra
Chaudhry.
A statement from MASI said Mr Hunter will take
part in a separate roundtable with local news
media executives during his visit from
Australia.
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on 03 May
every year and this year ‘s theme is “Media
Freedom Empowers People.”
“MASI is showing that media freedom is alive and
well in Solomon Islands, unlike in some other
countries in the region, said Solomon Star
publisher, John Lamani
“Dr Sikua is strongly supporting this day. He is
showing that Solomon Islands is a true
democracy. He is showing his Government supports
the right of all Solomon Islanders to freedom of
expression and information.
In Fiji, the Fiji Media Council has produced
short television and radio spots on what the
people understand by media freedom. Local
television and radios have been running these
programmes during the week in the lead up to 03
May, celebrated throughout the world.
In Papua New Guinea, the School of Communication
at the Divine Word University in Madang is
organising a Media Freedom Day involving
debates, dramas and visits by their journalism
students to various communities to discuss press
freedom and freedom of expression. Community
visits will be broadcast on the School’s FM
radio station.
An Editors Forum has been organised by the
Journalists Association of Western Samoa (JAWS)
in Apia to celebrate World Press Freedom Day.
The 2008 Forum to be opened by the Prime
Minister of Samoa will feature media executives
who will speak on the theme of WMFD.
In Vanuatu, the Media Association of Vanuatu has
organised a media rally to culminate in an open
day for all the media organisations in Port
Vila. Media houses will open their doors for
members of the public to see how they operate.
