NEW ZEALAND: Unitec urges Maori and Pacific Island communities to enrol now

Source: Unitec Press Release

Maori and Pacific Islanders looking to enrol at Unitec Institute of Technology should get their applications in now or face missing out on places says the Auckland tertiary provider.

The two communities have traditionally made up the majority of late applications for Unitec programmes but with places fast filling up, they are being urged to act now.

Of the 22,205 students who attended Unitec last year studying both formal and short course programmes, Pacific Islanders made up 10 percent while Maori were slightly higher on 11 percent.

With applications already exceeding places on some programmes, there is a strong possibility that there will be even less Maori and Pacific Island students on campus next year.

Executive Director, Student and Community Engagement, David Coltman says not all these applications will be successful but it would be in people’s best interest to act now.

“We have been aware that we get a great influx of applications from our Maori and Pasifika peoples at the beginning of each year which is great,” says Coltman.

“But many of our programmes are close to full so we’re urging people, particularly from these two communities, to get their applications in now to avoid any disappointment.”

Coltman says Unitec does not have cut off dates for applications but with the increase in the number of people returning to studying, some programmes are already full.

“This doesn’t necessarily translate to being accepted onto our programmes but it does lessen our Pasifika and Maori peoples’ chances if they don’t act now.”

The recession has seen Unitec enrolments significantly increase over the past year and with the government capping the number of students each tertiary provider can have, places will be limited.

Study areas that continue to fill up fast for Unitec include Foundation Studies, plumbing and gasfitting, nursing, performing and screen arts, architecture, and design and visual arts.

Coltman says there has been a significant increase this year in applications across all Unitec programmes from short courses to certificate and under graduate level.

Secondary school students are also being urged to act now if they are keen to study at Unitec.
“The majority of our full time students are school leavers and those in their early 20’s so those looking to attend Unitec next year should move on it now rather than later.”

Unitec has both the Centre for Pacific Development and Support and Maia Maori Development Centre to support Maori and Pacific students during their studies.

Source: U.S. Embassy Press Release

The US Chargé d’Affaires in Apia, Arnold Campbell today reiterated the US Government’s commitment to assisting the Pacific Islands affected by the Tsunami as he presented Independent State of Samoa Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Honorable Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi with a US Government relief aid grant.

Mr. Campbell said that today’s grant of WST $251,900 (USD $100,000) underscores the US willingness to help and that the US stands ready to respond to additional needs as they are identified by Government of Samoa.

“We’re in constant communication with the Government of Samoa and other regional governments about the best way we can work together to assist the victims of the Tsunami,” Mr. Campbell said.

He further reemphasized President Obama’s and Secretary Clinton’s sympathy for those affected by the disaster and their continuing support for the Government and people of Samoa as they work to recover from this tragedy.

VANUATU: Van Beverage releases new kava drink
Source: Vanuatu Daily Post

Last week saw the first production run of “Lava Cola- Vanuatu Kava Cola” by long term Vanuatu business Vanuatu Beverages Ltd.

Lava Cola is a Splashe cola drink with a shot of kava extract in each bottle, equivalent to a “wan blo 50”.

Whether you drink kava regularly or you like kava but not the taste, it is ideal to have both on its own or accompanied with a few shells.

General Manager of Vanuatu Beverage, Jean Yves Charbot said: “We are very proud to be producing this pioneering Vanuatu product. It has taken us many months to perfect the right mix but we believe everyone will enjoy the end product”.

In regards to concerns that Lava Cola could detract from nakamal sales, Jean Yvess said: “In no way does this product compete with drinking kava at a nakamal and it will not affect nakamal sales in any way.

In fact it can help boost nakamal turn over, as it is an ideal kale for export after and during kava.”

The kava extract used in Lava Cola is made using patent pending water based extraction technology. The end result being that Lava Cola cracks the long term kava puzzle of making a kava drink that is palatable.

The long term prospects for the Lava Cola bode well for both Vanuatu Beverage and Vanuatu as a whole.

“If the domestic market takes to it, then it is an extra source of income for kava farmers across the country. However if the current level of overseas interest shown develops into export sales of Lava Cola, then it could the catalyst to revolutionize Vanuatu kava exports,” said the developers of the kava extract used in Lava Cola.

They also said “We also want to acknowledge the many centuries of testing and trialing done by ni-Vanuatu use in the development of kava and are currently in talks with MP Ralph Regenvanu to donate a portion of the monies from sales of the kava extract to set up a charity to assist such bodies as the Malvatumauri National Council of Chiefs.”
